The client’s challenge

Smart switches/switchboards provide the ability to toggle your daily household loads like lights,fans and controlling their respective brightness and speed. While they offer great features in terms of usage, two areas of the user story remain unattended.

  • Upgrading/replacing loads is still done conventionally even though they are 'smart’, requiring outside technical support.

  • Steep learning curve and a user experience that disrupts the current consumer behavior of using switches.

Requirements capture

The solution to this challenge required the development of a system that would allow for:
Low set-up time, effort and cost investment
Ease of self-installation encouraging users to experiment with different configurations
Interoperability with other smart-home ecosystems and hardware
Preservation of existing user behavior with traditional switch operation

Mapping and analysis of existing system architecture, including dependent systems, control inputs and outputs as well as electrical and mechanical constraints
Specification of components for optimal functionality, manufacturability and lifecycle requirements.
Development of electronic circuitry schematics
Iterative design of optimized PCB layout including EMI/EMC management and footprint constraint management.
Development of exhaustive testing documentation along with in-depth analysis of use cases and application conditions
Iterative solution prototyping to identify risk areas, roadblocks and improvement opportunities.
